Veterinary nurse issues dog drinking bowl warning

A qualified veterinary nurse is warning dog owners to stop their pets from a common habit that could pose serious health risks. With warmer weather on the way, this behaviour is likely to become even more frequent.

Jade, known on TikTok as @jade.the.vet.nurs, has advised owners not to allow their dogs to drink from shared water bowls. She recommends bringing a personal supply of water instead, warning that communal bowls can increase the risk of dogs becoming unwell.

The expert said‌: “Don’t let your dogs drink out of communal water bowls. Communal water bowls are any bowls which are left outside of a person‘s house, a shop, maybe it’s at the dog park. These are basically dog bowls that multiple dogs can go and drink out of.”

Although it may seem harmless, she emphasises that, despite good intentions, these bowls can often become a source of contamination. She continued: “They can risk spreading infectious diseases to multiple dogs drinking out of them, and I don’t recommend anyone letting their dogs drink out of these bowls. Nor do I recommend that you actually put them outside of your houses, shops or dog parks.”

Jade warned that it could expose your dog to illness, as you can’t be sure how clean the bowl is. You can also not be sure whether it’s even been cleaned at all.

She continued: “You don’t know how long that water has been sat there, you don’t know if it’s fresh, if it’s stagnant, you don’t know when the last time that bowl was washed or what it was cleaned with, and you don’t know what other animals have been drinking out of it. Don’t forget, wildlife can drink out of these bowls as well.”

She explained that dogs and other wildlife – from foxes to rodents – can “spread parasites like roundworms, tapeworm, giardia, and lung worm, because again, you’re going to get slugs that come up and go all around the edge of those bowls, which is a great way to transmit lung worm.”

Communal bowls can “also transmit infectious diseases, such as Leptospirosis” which she says is commonly spread through rodents from drinking or entering the water bowl.

Kennel cough and parvovirus are also common concerns she highlights, adding that these bowls can act as an ideal “reservoir for bacteria to grow such as salmonella and E. coli, which can really upset your dog’s tummy.”

While these dogs are put out with good intentions, she concluded: “I strongly advise any dog owners to not let your dogs drink out these water bowls.

“If you want to take some water with you, take a travel bowl and a bottle of water and stop occasionally to give your dog a drink. But please don’t let your dogs drink out of communal water bowl.”

Pets4Home dog bowl warning

Backing up her claims, Pets4Homes adds there are even more dangers lurking around you that you need to be aware of.

It notes: “Water bowls left uncleaned or rinsed only briefly can develop biofilm, a slimy layer where harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and other pathogens thrive. These can provoke serious gastrointestinal upset in your dog, including vomiting and diarrhoea.

“Additionally, fungi and parasites like Giardia may contaminate water bowls or outside water sources such as puddles and lakes.

“Communal water bowls, often found outside pubs or parks, increase these risks due to multiple dogs sharing the same water. Viruses including kennel cough and canine papilloma virus may transmit through shared saliva. Studies in 2025 UK veterinary circles emphasise avoiding communal bowls to protect your dog from respiratory infections and other diseases.”
