The Chicks Announce 20th Anniversary U.S. Tour Dates
The Chicks have announced a new tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their defiant album Taking the Long Way.
Starting in Detroit, the trio will hit the road this fall playing 16 shows across the country. Major stops include multiple shows in Chicago, New York, San Antonio, and more, before closing out with two nights in Hollywood, California. The tour is also notable for the size of the venues the Chicks are playing: intimate theaters.
General sale for the tour begins on Thursday, June 4, at 10 a.m. local time. An artist presale will take place on Wednesday, June 3, at 10 a.m.
Taking the Long Way was released in 2006, and is one of the Chicks’ biggest and most acclaimed albums. Besides hitting Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, it also marked their first record back in the spotlight after being blacklisted for their comments regarding President George W. Bush and the Iraq War.
At a concert in 2003, Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines said she was “ashamed” that Bush was from Texas (their home state) and denounced the war. Their comments triggered a deluge of backlash from the media and fans alike; their songs were pulled from country radio stations; the band was jeered at during live appearances; and some dissenters even took to destroying their CDs.
Taking the Long Way spawned the single “Not Ready to Make Nice,” where they shot back at the controversy and vowed to keep speaking out regardless of the consequences. It became an anthem for self-determination, and the Chicks later earned five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.
The Chicks released their newest album, Gaslighter, in 2020 via Columbia Records. It was their first record since Taking the Long Way, and their first after a name change and 14-year hiatus. The Chicks keep on making their voices heard, though; last week, Maines called Donald Trump a “fugly slut” for establishing a slush fund for his supporters and allies with U.S. tax dollars.
