Lord of the Rings new film Aragorn star announced as Viggo Mortensen recast | Films | Entertainment
Original Sméagol star Andy Serkis is well underway intp pre-production on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Set during the time jump at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring, the new film, which he is also directing, follows Aragorn’s search for Sméagol the ring-bearer.
Alongside Serkis returning as Gollum are Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
However, Viggo Mortensen has aged out of the role of Aragorn and has been recast.
Originally rumoured to be his replacement was Leo Woodall, but it turns out he’s playing another part.
Announced by Warner Bros, who gave their presentation at CinemaCon Las Vegas today, Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan will be playing Aragorn aka Strider in the upcoming Lord of the Rings sidequel. Also joining the cast is Kate Winslet as Marigol, who may be Marigol Gamgee, Samwise’s sister, while Lee Pace reprises the Elven king Thranduil. As for Woodall, he will play Halvard, a Dúnedain Ranger who joins Aragon on his hunt for Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits cinemas on December 17, 2027.
