‘Easiest’ dog breeds for first-time owners — not Border Collie or pug

Choosing your first dog is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming when it comes to training. While many people assume famously intelligent breeds like the Border Collie are the easiest to train, or that smaller companion dogs such as the Pug make simple pets for beginners, a pet expert says this isn’t always the case.

Butternut Box’s vet nurse, Leah Callaghan, has put together a list of her top five dog breeds for first-time owners. She shared: “These are the ones that will give you all the love, loyalty, and fun without making you feel like you’re in over your head. There is a dog on this list for you, whether you like to snuggle on the couch or go for walks on the weekend.”

If we have missed your favourite dog on the list, let us know in the comments below.

1. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Leah said: “Cavaliers are a great choice for first-time (owners), and it’s not hard to see why.

“They were bred to be lap dogs that are good companions, so everything about them is made to be comfortable, close, and loving.”

Unlike high-energy working breeds like the Border Collie, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is happy with moderate exercise and plenty of downtime.

Their gentle, eager-to-please nature also means they respond well to positive reinforcement, making them easy to train.

2. Labrador & Golden Retriever

Breeds like the Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever are highly social and thrive as part of the family. They naturally look to their owners for guidance and companionship.

Leah added: “A young Labrador or Golden Retriever is a happy ball of energy – happy, loving, and eager to please. Their strong desire to eat and natural curiosity make training a fun experience instead of a battle of wills.

“However, if not carefully managed, that same love of food can lead to scavenging, naughty behaviour, or weight gain.”

3. Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer makes a great companion for first-time dog owners thanks to its intelligence, alert nature and capacity to build a strong bond.

While they have a lively streak, they’re well-balanced with regular mental and physical exercise and adapt easily to different homes.

They learn quickly, enjoy being involved, and respond best to consistent, positive training that keeps things varied and engaging.

4. Poodle

Leah noted: “Poodles are truly one of the most trainable and versatile dog breeds and are a great option for a first-time dog mum who wants to go through the process together.

“Well-known for intelligence and flexibility, they will promptly grasp orders and will learn fast from the very first day.

“They respond much better when trained gently and consistently, as their sensitive nature to encouragement means harsh correction isn’t effective.”

5. Cocker Spaniel (English or American)

The Cocker Spaniel is often a favourite among first-time dog owners thanks to its affectionate nature, intelligence and eagerness to please.

They learn commands and routines quickly, respond well to gentle, reward-based training, and love being involved in family life.

With proper socialisation and guidance, they can be loyal, trainable and highly manageable companions.
