Moving to a completely different country can be intimidating, and it’s natural to feel somewhat alienated within an unfamiliar culture. However, one American man living in the UK has expressed his delight at being granted what he described as “the highest honour possible” from his British in-laws.

The man, who shares content on social media as yankeedoodleintheuk, recounted the touching tale on Instagram. In the video description he stated: “Something amazing has happened as an American in the UK… Something that has taken years of hard work, trying to fit in, working on understanding of such a wonderful, beautiful culture. I’ve been given the highest honour the British have to give.”

The footage also featured the text: “The British gave me the highest honour possible… and my life will never be the same.”

Beginning the video, he said: “Something beautiful just happened to me the other day and I think it finally means I’ve been accepted into British society.

“Nothing too dramatic, nothing too out of this world, just something simple. Something that made me feel decent.

“It was my mother-in-law’s birthday party the other day, and we wanted to celebrate with the most British cake possible – the Colin the Caterpillar cake.”

Marks and Spencer’s iconic Colin the Caterpillar cake is a staple at celebrations across Britain. Described by the retailer as “the original and best”, M&S launched the cake back in 1990, reports the Mirror. It is made of a substantial chocolate sponge roll filled with chocolate buttercream, enveloped in rich milk chocolate and chocolate beans – finished with those essential white chocolate feet and face.

The man continued: “I couldn’t go to the party because our nephews have chicken pox and I’ve never had them before. [I was] wishing I was there having some of the cake, so I asked my wife ‘can you just bring me a slice back home?’

“So hours, hours go by and she returns home and says ‘I’ve brought you back something, a surprise’. She opened up the tub and it wasn’t just a slice or a slice of his belly.

“It was his head! It was his lovely head!

“At that moment I was just like ‘oh my God, Colin the Caterpillar’s head!’ It’s the piece I’ve never had before, it’s the relic, it’s the Holy Grail, it’s something beautiful.

“I took it in my hands and looked at it and like a little tear came down my cheek, and I thought ‘this is my moment, my family fully loves me. I’ve got Colin the Caterpillar’s head’.”

Commenters loved the story. One said: “They really love you.” Another wrote: “You have arrived brotha!”

Someone else said: “You are the son she didn’t give birth to or adopted! You are loved, respected and valued!”

And another commented: “Welcome, now just don’t eat a Terry’s chocolate orange like an apple and you’re all good.”
