While they’re known for their independence, a cat’s body language can reveal a lot about how comfortable and content they feel around you. On TikTok, user Dr Mark, known as @drmarkwest, shared four key signs your cat is relaxed and thriving – and if your pet is doing these, it’s a strong sign they’re living their best life. Owners whose cats are doing any of the behaviours outlined by Dr Mark can be assured their pet is happy and comfortable.

Sleeping with their belly up

If your cat is stretched out on its back with its belly completely visible, it may appear adorable – but it actually signifies considerably more. In the wild, this position would leave them entirely exposed to predators, so they’d never adopt it unless they felt 100 per cent safe.

At home, it’s an indication your cat trusts you implicitly and feels entirely secure in its surroundings.

Those spontaneous explosions of energy where your cat tears around the house at breakneck speed might appear chaotic – but they’re actually positive. The “zoomies” are frequently an indication your cat has no accumulated stress and feels comfortable enough to release pent-up energy.

A calm, contented cat will expend energy in brief, playful episodes like this, rather than displaying symptoms of anxiety or tension.

Watching you from across the room

It may seem as though you’re being quietly scrutinised, but when your cat chooses to sit and watch you from afar, it’s genuinely a bonding gesture.

Cats who feel attached to their owners will frequently monitor them, even during periods of no direct interaction. This demonstrates they feel at ease in your company and regard you as integral to their secure environment.

Frequently referred to as a “cat kiss”, the slow blink is amongst the most unmistakable displays of affection. When your cat gazes at you and gradually closes its eyes, it’s expressing trust, love, and contentment.

Some owners even reciprocate the gesture – and in numerous instances, their cat will blink in response.

Collectively, these subtle behaviours reveal a more complete picture. Your cat may not always be explicit about its emotions, but if it’s displaying these behaviours, the likelihood is it’s content, comfortable – and discreetly enjoying its best life right beneath your nose.
