Lying awake at 3am because the bedroom feels like a sauna, your day won’t stop replaying, or tomorrow’s to-do list is running through your mind is something most of us recognise. But one quick exercise could help your brain switch gears and settle more quickly.

Sleep retailer Dreams is recommending the “5-4-3-2-1” technique – a grounding exercise used to calm nerves and ease anxious feelings before they snowball.

The idea is simple: work through your senses by listing five things you can see, four you can feel, three you can hear, two you can smell and one you can taste. By focusing on what’s happening around you right now, it pulls attention away from racing thoughts and back into the present.

How to do the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique

Start by getting comfortable. If you’re doing this to fall asleep, lie in your normal sleeping position. Then focus on your breathing: notice its rhythm and take slow, deep, unhurried breaths to help your body begin to relax.

The good news is this grounding technique can be especially helpful for children who feel anxious at bedtime or have overactive imaginations, the retailer says. Dreams suggests making it a simple bedtime game you play together, taking turns to spot and name things.

For younger children, you can scale it down to a 3-2-1 version – three things to see, two to hear and one to feel – as part of a calming, screen-free routine. Dreams’ experts also recommend practising the method daily, even when you’re feeling relaxed, so it’s easier to reach for when stress hits. Over time, you may also learn which senses calm you most, helping you run through the steps more quickly.
