May has been a bumper month for the streaming platforms. Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer have all added to their catalogues. Here are three films I believe are must-watches. One is a classic war film, another is a slasher movie, and a drama is thrown in for good measure.

It Ends with Us is a romantic drama film directed by Justin Baldoni and written by Christy Hall, based on the 2016 novel by Colleen Hoover. Released in 2024, the film stars Blake Lively alongside Baldoni, Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, and Hasan Minhaj.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Lily Bloom overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan, suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realises she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.”

It Ends With Us is now streaming on Netflix.

Scream 7 was released earlier this year and is an American slasher film directed by Kevin Williamson and written by Williamson and Guy Busick. It is the sequel to Scream VI (2023) and the seventh instalment in the Scream film series. It stars Neve Campbell, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Courteney Cox, reprising their roles from the previous films, with Isabel May, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, McKenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, Mark Consuelos, Tim Simons, and Joel McHale also starring.

The movie’s plot reads: “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney has built a new lifrealisedarkest fears are realised as her daughter becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, she must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.”

Scream 7 is now on Amazon Prime.

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 epic war film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat.

The film is set in 1944 in Normandy, France, during World War II. Saving Private Ryan stars Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, alongside Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore and Jeremy Davies. It is inspired by the books of Stephen E. Ambrose and accounts of multiple soldiers in a single family.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) takes his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, while searching for Ryan, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage.”

Saving Private Ryan is now streaming on BBC iPlayer.
