‘Exhilarating’ 3 hour Odyssey movie is now streaming for free | Films | Entertainment
Nevertheless, back in 1997, there was an epic 3 hour TV movie made for NBC in two parts and it’s now streaming for free on YouTube via Popcornflix. Covering more of the story and staying true to the fantastical, this version stars Armand Assante as Odysseus.
He’s joined by an impressive cast, including Gerald Chaplin as Eurycleia, Christopher Lee as Tiresias, Eric Roberts as Eurymachus and Vanessa Williams as Calypso. What’s particularly fun and 90s about this one is that the monster effects were done by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The Odyssey went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries or Special.
The Rotten Tomatoes consensus for 1997’s The Odyssey reads: “The Odyssey delivers an exhilarating, visually spectacular retelling of Homer’s epic, buoyed by a committed international cast and a brisk sense of adventure.” Three years later, NBC adapted Jason and the Argonauts and that too is available to watch for free on YouTube.
