The final curtain has fallen on Hollywood’s biggest night — and after months of campaigning, surprises and speculation, the winners of the 98th Academy Awards have officially been crowned. Stars packed into the Dolby Theatre for the glittering ceremony hosted by Conan O’Brien, bringing awards season to a dramatic close. While early buzz had centred on Sinners — which led nominations with a record-breaking 16 — the evening ultimately belonged to Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which stormed to the top prizes.
Anderson’s epic secured Best Picture and Best Director, finally earning the filmmaker his long-awaited Oscar after decades of nominations. The film also triumphed in Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Supporting Actor and the newly introduced Best Casting category, making it the night’s biggest overall winner. In the acting races, Michael B. Jordan delivered on months of predictions by winning Best Actor for Sinners, beating contenders including Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Jessie Buckley was named Best Actress for her performance in Hamnet, overcoming a strong field that included Emma Stone and Kate Hudson.

Veteran star Sean Penn claimed Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, while Amy Madigan took Supporting Actress for Weapons, capping a career-defining moment for the respected performer.
Despite losing Best Picture, Sinners still walked away with a significant haul. The film won Original Screenplay, Original Score and Best Cinematography — the latter marking a historic victory for Autumn Durald Arkapaw as the first woman and first Black cinematographer to win the award.
International cinema also had its moment. Norway’s Sentimental Value won Best International Feature Film, while political documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin secured Best Documentary Feature. In the shorter documentary category, All the Empty Rooms triumphed.
Animation proved another standout field. KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature, while its track “Golden” also took Best Original Song. Animated Short went to The Girl Who Cried Pearls.
Technical awards were spread across several productions. Avatar: Fire and Ash claimed Best Visual Effects, racing drama F1 took Best Sound, and Frankenstein dominated the design categories with wins for Production Design, Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling.
