Christmas is just over a month away, but the end of November and early December can feel like the final hurdle. Sometimes it’s hard to get excited about the big day when it’s cold, wet and dark outside. And this is where Christmas films come in. Watching something festive is one of the best ways to lift your spirits and get into the Christmas mood.

And one film that’s currently streaming for free on BBC iPlayer has been called a “masterpiece” and could be just what you need to feel festive. The romantic comedy stars Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke alongside Crazy Rich Asians actor Henry Golding. Set in London, the story follows a young woman who works in a Christmas shop but feels lost and unsure of her future. That changes when she meets a man who seems to be full of optimism and kindness.

The film is called Last Christmas and is named after the famous Wham! song. Clarke plays Kate, a woman who feels like her life is falling apart until she meets Tom (Golding), who helps her see things differently.

The film was first released in 2019 and is inspired by the music of George Michael and Wham!, including the 1984 hit ‘Last Christmas’.

It was directed by Paul Feig and written by Emma Thompson and Bryony Kimmings, with Thompson also appearing in the film.

The cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, with a cameo from Wham!’s Andrew Ridgeley at the end of the film.

It was filmed in London across locations such as Covent Garden, Regent Street and the Thames Embankment, and includes a soundtrack of George Michael songs, one of which had never been released before.

Since appearing on BBC iPlayer, fans have been full of praise. One viewer said: “Excellent movie.

“Warm, funny, interesting and endearing with great acting and direction. Perfect for dark November or December nights, and it will get you into the festive spirit.”

Another person commented: “Love this movie. It’s a real feel-good and I never saw the ending coming. Just a really beautiful storyline. A masterpiece of sorts.”

A third wrote: “A lot of heart, soundtrack sensational, this is on my annual Christmas movie run.”

Someone else added: “Literally my favourite Christmas movie. Not a rom-com, but I don’t want to give anything away.

“It is about love for yourself, your tribe and your neighbours. The perfect Christmas movie, and if you love Wham, bonus!”

Last Christmas is available to stream now for free on BBC iPlayer with a valid TV licence.
