Iconic British retailer to close 32 stores in January — full list
British brand River Island will be closing 32 of its stores in January 2026, as part of a restructuring plan to help save the iconic retailer. The fashion brand reported a £32.3million pre-tax loss last year.
River Island currently has over 200 shops across the UK and employs over 5,000 staff, putting many of these jobs at risk. A number of high-street stores have closed down this year, including major supermarkets like Marks and Spencer, which closed its Wolverhampton store on Dudley Street a few months ago. Morrisons also shut down over 100 cafes, florists, and pharmacies this year, and Poundland’s 800 stores are being reduced to 650, with more closures expected in 2026.
