A cult horror film featuring a huge 90s star has  landed on Amazon Prime, but fans are warning people not to watch it alone.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Sarah Michelle Geller plays Karen in the award-winning Takashi Shimizu film The Grudge.

We follow the story of Karen as she lives in Japan and works as a caretaker for the elderly people. Assigned a visit to an elderly lady (Grace Zabriskie) Kare discovers some terrifying an puzzling happenings in the old house.

This dark history follows Karen around her life until she unveils the true story of the horror that unfolded.

The tale takes its inspiration from the belief that when someone dies in a powerful grip of rage, then a curse is left behind.

It’s a “stain” that forever becomes a part of the place where the death occurred, and it will kill everything it touches.

One Reddit user said they could not watch television alone for weeks after seeing The Grudge. They wrote: “I saw it in theaters when I was 10 and 18 years later that movie is still TERRIFYING. Same with the ring, watched that the year before the grudge and couldn’t watch tv alone for a week.”

Max Allen called the film “interesting,” saying it had left an indelible mark on pop culture. He rated the film 8/10  on Rotten Tomatoes and wrote: “The Grudge has interesting ghost lore, which isn’t too different from the way we view ghosts in America, but adds emphasis on reliving the violent past, which I think is fun and gives the viewer a bit more to latch onto as far as why the ghost exists.

“The ghost looks extremely creepy in most scenes, with a face that genuinely terrified me as a kid, even before I had seen the movie. Its mark on pop culture is undeniable.”

Another reviewer wrote: “This is a movie that’s heavy on atmosphere and freaky imagery. The Grudge does a great job of keeping you guessing. You never really know where it’s going, and since the story isn’t linear you really have to pay attention.”

Another labelled it the best horror film they had ever seen, saying: “I’m writing this after seeing The Grudge on multiple times. I must say I’ve seen it first in a Sunday morning at 3am, and I must say that, since that fateful morning, like 3 weeks ago, I’ve remained paranoid of dark corners in my room. The movie is about an American couple that moved in Japan for study.

“They are confronted with a “slight” problem when Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) fills in for Yoko from the Social Care Center she was working for. She unwittingly steps into a cursed house that holds dark secrets. The movie is a frightfest that reaches in the depths of your mind as sure as a surgeon’s blade cuts on the line, leaving you so much as 2 minutes of “breath-catching” time.

“Very nicely made, the actors have been up to my expectations, and the “badguy” is the scariest thing to be caught on camera… I’ve had a perverse pleasure after viewing the movie, in the sense that I swore to god I wouldn’t watch another movie if they’ll come out with a sequel…but I enjoyed the experience it provided; it’s not that I’m a scaredy cat… it’s just that I’m afraid I won’t live through it. My advice is don’t watch it just so you know you’ve watched it, watch it in such a manner so you “feel” everything this little “gem” has to offer.”
