‘One of the best thrillers of all time’ is currently climbing the Netflix rankings as it demonstrates remarkable popularity amongst subscribers.

The streaming service’s current top 10 films is largely filled with contemporary titles.

These include Louis Theroux’s latest documentary Inside the Manosphere, BAFTA-winning drama I Swear and sci-fi action epic War Machine.

Yet, at the time of writing, positioned at number six is Double Jeopardy. The picture originally debuted in 1999 and more than 25 years on, is proving a hit with viewers once more.

For those unacquainted with the feature, the narrative follows Libby Parsons who believes she possesses everything. Nevertheless, she discovers herself wrongly accused of her husband’s murder.

She endures the lengthy years imprisoned by concentrating on two intense desires that sustain her throughout. Firstly, locating her son’s whereabouts and secondly, unravelling the mystery that shattered her previously idyllic existence, reports the Mirror.

As she embarks upon her path of vengeance, blocking her progress, however, is her parole officer, Travis Lehman. Libby represents a challenge to the world-weary official, one that compels him to confront his own shortcomings whilst setting him against his supervisors and fellow law enforcement officers.

Heading the ensemble are Ashley Judd as Libby and Tommy Lee Jones as Travis, delivering performances that numerous admirers suggest make the film worth viewing alone. Whilst it fell short of critical acclaim during its original release, it dominated the US box office for three weeks and generated almost $180 million globally against a $40 million budget.

Audiences remain somewhat divided on Double Jeopardy, though plenty enthusiastically endorse it. This includes viewers who draw comparisons to the more commercially successful and widely recognised The Fugitive, particularly given Tommy Lee Jones’ comparable roles in both productions.

Yet others heap on praise, with one viewer merely stating: “One of the best thrillers of all time.”

Another contributed: “It’s a great thriller with a really good cast and a really interesting story. I’ve watched it many times. It’s suspenseful and engaging with great characters developments and not a dull moment. Highly recommended!”.

Whilst a third observed: “This is a riveting portrait of revenge. The villain is up-to-date and bad; the heroine, cunning and driven by the reclamation of her son. From the last frame to first, I was glued to the screen. You will be too.”

Someone else remarked: “A solid action thriller, captivating to the last minute. The characters were well acted and well cast. The storyline well developed and had good flow. Loved Judd in this, she was smart and kept her cool.”

One viewer also offered a remarkably candid assessment: “Double Jeopardy is a gripping late-’90s thriller that blends legal intrigue with emotional drama. Ashley Judd delivers a strong, grounded performance as Libby Parsons, a woman wrongfully convicted of her husband’s murder who transforms from a trusting wife into a determined survivor seeking justice.”

They added: “Tommy Lee Jones adds charm and moral complexity. The film uses the double jeopardy premise effectively, keeping the story brisk and suspenseful despite some logical stretches. Direction, moody visuals, and a supporting cast enrich the experience, balancing action, tension, and character development. Whilst not flawless, the film’s emotional stakes, star power, and relentless pacing make it an engaging, rewatchable thriller that remains memorable decades later, delivering satisfying twists and a strong payoff.”

Double Jeopardy is streaming on Netflix.
