Rolf was rescued from the Yulin Dog Meat Market, in China, by Julia de Cadenet’s dog shelter, NoToDogMeat. Julia shared Rolf’s story: “When we rescued Rolf from the brutal Yulin Dog Meat Market, he was cowering at the back of a crate.

“This poor little boy was about three years old when he was rescued from the back of a dog meat restaurant. He had been chained up by his legs and nose. The butcher pulled dogs out with metal tongs and threw them into a small truck for slaughter. He had suffered multiple injuries but is healing well. He still has ongoing skin and eye issues but is responding well to medication.”

Rolf did not bark, scratch, cry, or bite. Instead, he just remained silent as he was being rescued.

Julia recalled: “He made no sound during the 20-hour drive back to our base. For months after the rescue, he would not move from his plastic bed. He was completely shut down. We tended to his skin and other wounds slowly and with love.”

After several months, Rolf is now a healthy dog. “Now he moves to the kennel edge and watches the other dogs and our team intently. Once in a while, he will come out, and we can give him a gentle cuddle.”

He’s still very afraid and nervous, but “with our love and care, he is slowly gaining confidence”. Sadly, Rolf hasn’t been adopted yet, and he is still looking for his forever home.

Julia said: “He would make a lovely pet and is just one of the amazing dogs we are proposing for adoption this spring. We have 700 dogs and cats at our shelter. Each month is a struggle to feed them and your continued support makes all the difference.”

NoToDogMeat was founded by Julia de Cadenet in 2009 when she first witnessed the horrors of the dog meat markets in China.

People who want to support Julia’s dogs and cats from China can contact NoToDogMeat to know more about the adoption process.
