Dog owners warned that popular meat is ‘toxic’ for pets

You might believe that offering a portion of your meal to your dog is a harmless treat, but one popular meat could actually be placing your pet in genuine danger. While it’s a favourite on numerous breakfast tables or at a barbecue, specialists at Pet MD caution that this food contains ingredients that are not only unhealthy but potentially toxic to dogs.

If you’ve been giving your four-legged companion sausages, it might be time to think again – here’s why you should steer clear of them to ensure your dog remains safe. The expert said: “Unfortunately, most kinds of sausage are not safe for dogs to eat and should not be offered as a treat. This goes for breakfast sausage, Vienna sausage, and sausage made in all forms-links, patties, and crumbles are all no-goes for Fido.”

Sausages contain numerous ingredients that aren’t suitable for dogs. They’re typically made with minced meat, additional fat, and an assortment of seasonings, such as garlic, which is poisonous to dogs, along with other additives that aren’t appropriate for pets.

Compared to plain meats like chicken or minced beef, sausages are considerably higher in fat and sodium, making them a poor choice for your dog’s nutrition.

The pet expert added: “Too much of either can lead to serious (and painful) health conditions in dogs, such as pancreatitis.

“Even worse, sausage often contains seasonings like garlic, onion, or other spicy additives that should always be avoided. These sausages can make your dog very sick and should never be shared with your pup.”

While a modest portion of plain sausage is unlikely to cause your dog any serious harm, there are considerably safer ways to boost the protein content of their diet.

That said, should your dog have consumed a large amount of sausage and appears to be feeling poorly, experts at Pet MD recommend getting in touch with your vet without delay.

Other hazardous foods

Animal welfare charity Blue Cross cautions that grapes, raisins, and currants are highly toxic to dogs, warning: “Grapes and raisins can put dogs at risk of kidney failure – even a small amount can make your dog seriously ill.

“The exact cause of toxicity to dogs is unknown, but it appears that some dogs are much more sensitive to grape toxicity than others. Symptoms of poisoning usually show within 24 hours.”

Beyond these, it is strongly advisable to keep chocolate, onions, avocado, and macadamia nuts well out of your dog’s reach. It is equally vital to ensure they cannot get their paws on caffeinated drinks such as coffee or tea.
