Millions of households swear by white vinegar as a cheap and natural way to tackle stubborn stains, but one cleaning expert is warning that the popular hack could end up costing homeowners thousands of pounds.

White vinegar has long been promoted as a budget-friendly alternative to chemical cleaners, with many using it to clean wooden floors. However, Lucas Lar, director and wood technology engineer at Made of Wood, says the common cleaning tip could be doing more harm than good.

He has issued a “red alert” to homeowners, warning that repeated use of white vinegar can damage wooden flooring by stripping away its protective finish and increasing the risk of costly repairs.

“There is a huge misconception that because vinegar is ‘natural,’ it is safe for every surface,” Lucas explained.

“That’s a very damaging myth. Vinegar is an acetic acid. When applied to wood floorboards, it can be incredibly aggressive.”

He warned that while the damage may not be obvious straight away, regular use can gradually wear down the protective coatings designed to keep wooden floors looking their best.

“Repeated use can gradually dull or damage certain protective finishes that keep wooden floors looking their best,” he said.

According to Lucas, many homeowners mistakenly believe they are cleaning the wood itself when, in reality, they are cleaning the finish applied to protect it.

“The important thing to remember is that you’re rarely cleaning the wood itself – you’re cleaning the protective coating that’s been applied to it,” he said.

“Different floors have different finishes, from lacquer and oil to hardwax oil, and each reacts differently to cleaning products.”

Although a bottle of white vinegar can cost less than £1, Lucas warned that any savings could quickly disappear if the flooring needs professional restoration.

“In some cases, if the protective seal has been worn away, you’re looking at professional refinishing work or even replacement if it’s severe,” he explained.

“That’s where costs can quickly add up into the hundreds or even thousands, depending on the size of the space and the condition of the floor.”

Instead of relying on vinegar, Lucas recommends using products specifically designed for wooden flooring.

“For everyday cleaning, a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner is usually the safest option because it’s formulated to remove dirt without stripping or weakening the floor’s protective finish,” he said.

He also advised homeowners to avoid soaking wooden floors with water, regardless of which cleaning product they choose.

“It’s also important to avoid saturating wooden floors with water, as excess moisture can cause long-term problems regardless of the cleaning product you’re using.”

Lucas added that wooden flooring should be treated as a long-term investment and maintained accordingly.

“Wooden floors are a long-term investment in a home. Looking after them properly from the start is what keeps them looking good years down the line.”

He concluded with a warning for homeowners tempted by the budget cleaning trick.

“A 68p bottle of vinegar might seem like a bargain, but if it affects the finish of your flooring, it can end up being a very expensive mistake.”
