Broward College President Fends Off Firing Attempt

Torey Alston remains the president of Broward College.

The college’s Board of Trustees had scheduled a meeting for Wednesday morning, with the president’s termination listed as the sole agenda item. But following a complaint from Alston on Tuesday in which he alleged the board was violating the terms of his employment contract, a judge ordered the two sides into mediation, The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

The embattled president argued that under the terms of his contract, the board must first make a good-faith attempt to resolve disputes via mediation, if requested by either party. A judge agreed and ordered the two parties to attempt to address their concerns that way.

If mediation fails, trustees will have to call another meeting if they intend to follow through on the effort to terminate Alston, who has led the college since early 2025. Alston, a former local school board member appointed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, stepped into the job with no experience in higher education aside from a stint serving as a trustee at Florida A&M University from 2010 through 2015.

In recent months, Alston and trustees have reportedly clashed over his communication with board members and slumping passage rates on nursing exams, among various other issues.
