Every so often, one photograph changes everything. For Penelope Chilvers, that moment came courtesy of Princess Catherine. Long before she became one of the world’s most influential style icons, the future Princess of Wales quietly put one British footwear brand on the map when she stepped out in its now-iconic Long Tassel Boots – a moment that would transform the label forever.
Princess Catherine, now 44, first wore the signature Penelope Chilvers Long Tassel Boots at the Blenheim Palace Game Fair in Oxfordshire in August 2004, while she was still a student at the University of St Andrews. More than two decades later, the boots remain one of the defining pieces in her off-duty wardrobe.
This has cemented Penelope Chilvers as one of the most recognisable names in royal fashion.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Express, founder Penelope Chilvers reflected on the remarkable journey that began with a single pair of handcrafted boots in Spain before becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated luxury footwear brands.
“I launched the brand 25 years ago when I was living in Spain and working with wonderful artisans, one of whom was a bootmaker. I had a pair of boots made to my own specifications for myself and, when I came back to live in London, all my girlfriends wanted a pair.”
She continued, “I started making them for my friends and introduced them to The Cross in Notting Hill Gate, where we sold 100 pairs in a season. That took me to Paris Fashion Week, and then I was incredibly lucky to sell a pair to Kate Middleton and her mother Carole.”
At the time, nobody could have predicted the impact Catherine’s choice of footwear would have. Years later, when photographs of the then-future Princess wearing the boots resurfaced following her engagement to Prince William, they quickly became one of the most talked-about fashion moments in Britain.

Penelope still remembers exactly how extraordinary that moment felt.
“She bought a pair of our Long Tassel Boots and, when she became engaged to Prince William, there was a photograph of her wearing them at Blenheim Palace.”
“The image went completely viral. It was on every single front page around the world and I really felt that was probably the moment my business took off, or at least the moment it became a business that could truly grow. From there it has gone from strength to strength.”
The photographs did more than introduce shoppers to a pair of boots. They introduced millions to a British brand built on craftsmanship, slow fashion and timeless design.

More than 20 years on, Princess Catherine continues to champion investment dressing, and her Penelope Chilvers boots remain one of the clearest examples of buying well and wearing pieces for decades rather than seasons.
Since then, Penelope Chilvers has become synonymous with royal style. Alongside Princess Catherine, Duchess Sophie has repeatedly turned to the brand’s footwear, while Harriet Sperling, now Mrs Peter Phillips, has also become a fan, proving its appeal spans generations of royal women.
Looking back, Penelope says that first royal appearance gave the brand the platform it needed to flourish.

“I designed many more boots, continuing with an equestrian aesthetic, and then we moved into our first summer range. Looking back now, that royal moment was incredibly significant because it gave so many people the opportunity to discover the brand for the first time.”
Twenty-five years after launching the business, Penelope Chilvers continues to champion handcrafted footwear made by skilled artisans in Spain, staying true to the values that first attracted Princess Catherine all those years ago.
While fashion trends have come and gone, the Long Tassel Boots remain a testament to timeless British style – and to the remarkable influence one candid royal photograph can have on an independent brand.
