7 dog breeds most likely to suffer in the heatwave as owners warned
Dog owners are being urged to act fast as soaring temperatures put thousands of pets at risk. Pet experts have warned that some dogs can develop life-threatening heatstroke within minutes if proper precautions are not taken.
Early signs of overheating may include excessive panting, thick or sticky drool, unusually red or pale gums, loss of coordination, vomiting, diarrhoea, and, in severe cases, collapse. With temperatures set to remain high, owners are being told to stay alert for the signs and avoid common mistakes that could prove fatal.
To keep dogs safe this summer, walk them during the cooler morning or evening hours to avoid exposure to the highest temperatures. It is also important to check pavement temperatures before walks.
Owners should avoid completely shaving their dogs’ coats, as their fur helps regulate body temperature and protects them from sunburn; however, grooming is acceptable. Pet owners are advised to avoid leaving their pooch in hot cars and to ensure their pooch has access to fresh water at all times.
Below we have listed seven breeds most at risk of heatstroke. Did we miss any dogs on the list? Let us know in the comments below.
Saint Bernard

St Bernards, also called Bernies or Saints for short, are known for their large size but loving nature. Originally bred for rescue work in the snowy Swiss Alps, Saint Bernards are naturally suited to cold climates.
Due to their thick, insulating coat, Saint Bernards can struggle to stay cool in hot and humid conditions, making them more susceptible to overheating.
Avoid shaving off their fur and keep these breeds inside during extreme weather conditions.
