Princess Catherine may have captivated the world in her now-iconic Alexander McQueen wedding gown, but it was her second, lesser-known dress that quietly signalled the beginning of her modern royal wardrobe. After stepping out of Westminster Abbey in a show-stopping design complete with a dramatic three-metre train, Catherine, 44, later changed into a far more practical – yet equally elegant look, for the private evening reception at Buckingham Palace.
The second dress was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and featured a simpler ivory satin silhouette with a sweetheart neckline, a nipped-in waist and a crystal-embellished belt. The streamlined design allowed the bride to move freely throughout the evening – a considered contrast to the structure and scale of her ceremony gown.
The addition of a cropped angora cardigan gave the look a relaxed, almost effortless finish, softening the overall look and marking a subtle shift away from the day’s formality.

It was a deliberate transition – from royal spectacle to private celebration, and one that reflected Catherine’s instinct for balancing tradition with modern practicality.
Where the first dress was designed for impact, the second was rooted in wearability, a theme that has since become a defining element of her style.
This was, in fact, the third bridal look created by Burton for the royal wedding day. As well as designing Catherine’s ceremony and evening dresses, she was also behind the now-famous gown worn by Pippa Middleton, which drew widespread attention for its clean lines and impeccable tailoring.

The second gown also offered a rare glimpse into a more relaxed side of royal dressing, one that prioritised comfort without losing its sense of occasion.
Its softer structure and fluid silhouette allowed for movement, making it far more suited to an evening of celebrations behind palace doors.
The crystal belt added just enough detail to elevate the look, catching the light without overpowering the simplicity of the design. Unlike the ceremony dress, which was steeped in symbolism and tradition, this piece felt intentionally modern.

It stripped back the layers, both literally and visually, revealing a cleaner, more contemporary bridal aesthetic. The sweetheart neckline introduced a subtle shift in tone, bringing a softer, more romantic edge that contrasted with the formality of the lace bodice worn earlier in the day.
The addition of the angora cardigan further reinforced that transition, lending the outfit an almost understated, personal feel. It was a practical choice, but also a stylistic one, reflecting a bride stepping into a new phase of the day.
In many ways, this second look set the tone for what would become Catherine’s signature style in the years that followed. Thoughtful, refined and always considered, with an emphasis on pieces that work as well in reality as they do on display.
