In the latest episode of The Key, Inside Higher Ed’s news and analysis podcast, IHE’s news editor, Katherine Knott, and federal policy reporter Jessica Blake join editor in chief Sara Custer to discuss the latest news in federal higher ed policy.

The top story is how officials at the Department of Education are using interagency agreements to chip away at the department’s responsibilities. Last month, Education Secretary Linda McMahon announced plans to move the Office of Federal Student Aid to the Department of Treasury. In November, she announced six more agreements, this time transferring dozens of programs from several different offices within ED to four different departments—Health and Human Services, Interior, Labor, and State. A further move is outsourcing staff to other agencies while the remaining department staff are relocated to a smaller building.

Meanwhile, the department and the sector are preparing for robust discussions about accreditation in the upcoming negotiated rule making. Sparks at the recent NACIQI meeting could be a precursor for what’s to come in the meetings in April and May. And with the White House’s budget proposal expected to come out this week, IHE’s newsroom will be looking for any indication of how the administration plans to address the $17 billion gap in Pell Grant funding.
