Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, March 15, this year, and it’s our annual reminder to dote on our mums – something that frankly, we should be doing every single day of the year, for those of us fortunate enough to still have our mums with us.

Whilst there may be numerous activities and elaborate ways in which you can celebrate Mother’s Day, a classic movie marathon, though understated and often overlooked, may just be one of the finest ways through which you can connect with your mum.

We’ve put together a selection of six films that are certain to spark conversations with your mum and allow you to step into each other’s shoes (sometimes literally) and view the world through a different perspective – all whilst laughing, crying, and experiencing that bond of unconditional love with your mum.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

A genuinely fantastical viewing experience, Everything Everywhere All at Once tells the story of a middle-aged Chinese immigrant woman who becomes caught up in an extraordinary adventure – parallel universes, intricate family dynamics and drama, and plenty of action, reports OK!.

It’s the tale of a mother existing and experiencing our world(s) in their magnificent entirety as she embodies and excels in one role after another – something mums are renowned for being experts at, yet frequently not recognised for.

The film ultimately highlights a mother’s love for her children – something that warrants celebration on all days, not just Mother’s Day. Helmed and penned by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the picture features Michelle Yeoh in the principal role as Evelyn Wang and secured her a well-deserved Oscar for Best Actress.

It marked the first occasion an Asian woman claimed the top accolade at the esteemed ceremony, whilst also making her the first Malaysian to receive any Academy Award. Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis also collected Oscars for their supporting performances in the picture.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is available to stream for free on Channel 4.

The Sound of Music

You can never go wrong with this ultimate classic of all classics, especially on Mother’s Day. Robert Wise’s The Sound of Music has withstood the test of time and how.

The enigmatic Julie Andrews takes on the lead role of Maria, a young governess who comes into the house of a widowed naval captain who has seven children. Maria fills their home with love, music and warmth, bringing with her a new lease on life for the Von Trapp family.

The Sound of Music is a fictional retelling of the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, known to be one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the period right before World War II.

If you’re seeking a timeless classic that ticks all the boxes for viewing with mum, The Sound of Music is an obvious choice – and it’s available to stream on Disney+.

For those unfamiliar with this Oscar-nominated Greta Gerwig directorial – Mother’s Day presents an ideal opportunity to experience this moving and bittersweet portrayal of the intricate yet unwavering bond between a millennial mum and her adolescent daughter.

Stormy yet affectionate best captures this mother-daughter pair’s dynamic – and it’s arguably an accurate reflection of innumerable other relationships between mums and their offspring.

With Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf leading the cast, Lady Bird represents Gerwig’s semi-autobiographical endeavour to tug at heartstrings through exceptional and multi-layered narrative – something she achieves remarkably well in this production.

Lady Bird is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

If the intention is to snuggle with mum whilst both weeping copiously into tissues – this picture is perfect.

This 1983 masterpiece chronicles a mother grappling with accepting the fresh chapters emerging in her daughter’s existence – from matrimony to expecting a baby and romantic difficulties.

It examines the intricate relationship between a mum and her daughter, whilst tenderly highlighting that the connection of love between parent and child transcends everything else.

There isn’t a single accepted or correct approach to being an excellent mother to your child, and Terms of Endearment ensures we understand that.

Penned, produced and directed by James L Brooks, the film is a cinematic interpretation of Larry McMurtry’s 1975 novel bearing the same title. It features Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger in leading roles, with Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito completing an impressive supporting cast.

A Mother’s Day must-watch, Terms of Endearment can be streamed on NOW and Sky, and rented on Amazon Prime Video for £3.49.

This poignant depiction of eight women – four mothers and their four daughters – illuminates cultural and generational disparities, celebrating the multifaceted joys of motherhood.

It tells the heartwarming tale of four Chinese-American daughters and their immigrant mothers, offering a nuanced exploration of the complexities within their relationships and their interactions with the world.

An ideal Mother’s Day viewing featuring Tsai Chin, Kieu Chinh, Lisa Lu, France Nuyen, Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom, Tamlyn Tomita, and Ming-Na Wen – The Joy Luck Club can be streamed on Disney+.

Pure pandemonium and unfiltered fun, Freaky Friday promises a thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience. Those seeking a light-hearted Mother’s Day film to enjoy with mum will find this millennial classic hits the mark.

Freaky Friday (2003) is the endlessly amusing tale of teenager Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) and her psychologist widowed mother Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis) who find themselves in a bizarre body-swapping predicament. The two women couldn’t be more dissimilar – and it’s driving them insane. Enter body swap.

What ensues is a comical journey peppered with romance, high jinks and laughter – triumphant, side-splitting laughter.

Give this film a watch if you’re in the mood for a good chuckle with mum, whilst subtly gaining a deeper insight into her mindset – available to stream on Disney+.
