As a huge fan of TV show The Traitors, I have been super impressed with series four player Harriet and her intuition into the intricate gameplay. When I saw that she was also an author, I thought I needed to scope out one of her books.

But browsing, I noticed I had already read one, and it scandalised my book club a few years ago. When I was in a reading slump, I picked up a copy of Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce in a bargain bin. Now a Richard and Judy Book Club bestseller, this novel is about “a lesson in cruelty” and there is no way you will guess the ending.

Telling the story of Alison, a lawyer defending a major murder case, with a doting husband at home and an adorable daughter – yet beneath the surface, she is barely holding herself together.

Drinking to excess, carrying on an illicit affair and neglecting her family, there is also something else going on that doesn’t quite add up.

In my opinion, this is not the most literary of novels, but it is short, fast-paced and has a twist you will never see coming.

In fact, it is so wild you will be desperate to talk to anyone who will listen to help make sense of it all.

Not that my book club managed to make sense of it, I think even now, we are all still reeling from the events that unfolded in those pages.

Looking back, it reveals to me how shrewd and cunning Harriet is as an author, dropping subtle clues throughout the book, key skills needed to be a contestant on The Traitors.

This is a short, fun read that goes down a path you never considered. It has 4.2 stars on Amazon based on more than 65,000 reviews and has already sold over half a million copies.
