Every dog has its own set of quirks – most are harmless and charming, but some can leave owners questioning their meaning. It’s a concern that led one owner to turn to Reddit after noticing her puppy Enzo’s unusual response every time he sees her.

According to the owner, Enzo immediately rolls onto his back in almost every situation. She explained on social media: “Ever since we got our puppy, Enzo, I’ve noticed he lies on his back in literally every situation. Whether I get home from work, I’m eating and he wants a bite, I raise my voice at him for misbehaving, or I grab his leash to go for a walk – he flips over.”

While the behaviour appears endearing, the owner admitted she couldn’t help wondering whether there was a “secret” reason behind it – or if Enzo simply loves belly rubs. She added: “I always thought he just loved belly rubs, which I happily give him whenever he does it.

“But I’ve also heard that some dogs roll onto their backs when they’re anxious or fearful. Looking at his body language, does this seem normal, or is he just a lazy little guy who’s a big fan of getting his belly rubbed?”

Reddit users were quick to reassure her, with one user saying: “What a sweetie. The main thing to watch out for is if his body is shaking – that can be a sign he’s anxious or fearful. Otherwise, he’s just being agreeable and showing he’s not in charge. It’s a submissive behaviour.”

Another user added: “He wants belly rubs! It’s also a sign of submission. He’s telling you he knows you’re the boss – and yes, belly rubs!”

A third said: “It’s a submission pose. They expose their most vulnerable parts because they trust you, even when you get angry with them.”

One user also offered a gentle reminder about training: “Dogs tend to learn better through positive reinforcement. Instead of correcting ‘misbehaviour,’ it’s often more effective to reward desirable behaviour whenever possible.”

According to pet care experts at Wag!, there are five common reasons dogs show their bellies – and all of them are positive signs of a strong bond:

  • They love and trust you
  • They respect you and want to show it
  • They enjoy belly rubs
  • They’re cooling off
  • They feel safe

A statement reads: “Happy dogs who show you their belly when you return home may be doing their best to let you know that they adore you. Their entire body is relaxed, and they’re in a submissive posture while waiting for affection.”

The site adds that hierarchy plays an important role in canine behaviour, adding: “By exposing their vulnerable underbelly, dogs communicate peaceful intentions and acknowledge your authority.”

Dogs’ bellies are also especially sensitive and difficult for them to reach on their own, making belly rubs both pleasurable and a sign of trust. In warmer weather, rolling onto their backs may also help them cool down, as there’s less fur on their stomachs.

Finally, experts note that confident adult dogs often roll onto their backs in familiar environments – such as sofas or beds – when they’re fully relaxed and comfortable.
