Many people choose to renovate their homes from time to time, but some may end up regretting their decisions if the results don’t match their expectations.

One DIY enthusiast has revealed why she ‘regrets’ using a particular decorating technique in her home, and it’s not for the reason you might think.

Morgan, who goes by @brickhomehaven on Instagram, regularly shares updates about the renovation of her creekside colonial house with her 186,000 followers. In her latest post, she discussed a decorating method she’d used called colour drenching, and the significant impact it had on her.

Colour drenching is a popular trend in interior design where all elements of a room – walls, ceiling, woodwork, radiators, furniture, and even accessories – are painted in the same colour or varying tones of it.

The idea behind this technique is to create a seamless, immersive space that blends elements together, rather than emphasising strong contrasts.

Depending on the chosen colour and added textures, it can create an atmosphere that is either cosy and calming or bold and vibrant.

In her post, Morgan began by sharing clips of herself painting the ceilings in various rooms of her house, with overlay text reading: “Finally admitting I regret colour drenching every room in my home.”

She then showed the final results, adding: “It’s too cosy and now I’m a total homebody.”

In the caption, she playfully wrote: “I’ve been needing to get this off my chest… Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

“Colour drenching will make your home feel so immersive and relaxing that you might just want to stay in a little more often.”

The post was a hit with fans, garnering over 3,000 likes.

One individual exclaimed: “Thinking about it for our powder room.”

Another chimed in: “Love colour drenching!”

A third added: “Every room is perfection!”

How can you colour drench a room?

1. Plan out your colour scheme

Choose a colour: It’s crucial to pick a colour that aligns with your personal style and the purpose of the room.

Decide on the extent: Determine which elements you’ll include in your drenching – just the walls, or walls, ceiling, and woodwork. You can also paint radiators to help them blend in

Get inspiration: Creating a mood board to visualise your chosen scheme is beneficial

2. Prepare the room

Clean and prep the surfaces: Ensure all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and completely dry before painting.

Get the sander out: Lightly sand any glossy surfaces, such as skirting boards, to enhance paint adhesion.

Use a primer: If necessary, apply a primer to ensure the paint adheres well and achieves an even finish.

3. Apply the paint.

Choose the right paint: Opt for a multi-surface paint that can be applied to walls, ceilings, and woodwork from the same tin.

Paint in stages: Start with the ceiling, then move on to the walls, followed by the woodwork and any radiators, ensuring each layer is even.

Apply multiple coats: For the best depth and durability, don’t hesitate to apply additional coats as necessary.

4. Style your space

Create texture and patterns: To achieve a sophisticated finish, incorporate cushions, throws, and rugs with varying textures and patterns.

Use variations in tone: Introduce different tones or shades of the same colour through your furnishings and accessories to add depth to the scheme.

Don’t forget the details: Incorporate your core colour into cushions, lampshades, and wall art to create a harmonious look.
