The designer, who created the dress exclusively for Royal Ascot, said that the look is “elegant, optimistic and distinctly modern”, and it reflects the brand’s “signature approach to occasion dressing, where femininity, craftsmanship and contemporary sophistication come together”. Zara paired the dress with a colour-matching clutch by Anya Hindmarch (£1,150) and the Claudia gold heels by Emmy London (£545).

The royal finished the whole look with a pair of champagne sunglasses by Finlay (£160).

Zara’s dress was custom-made and is not available to purchase online, the total of Thursday’s wardrobe would be over £4,800.

Fans loved Zara’s look and took to social media to praise her.

One user said on Royal British Fashion’s Instagram page: “There are two Queens of style,at Ascot. Francesca and Zara.”

Another user added: “No doubt the best dressed at Ascot.”

On Thursday, Zara was joined by other members of the Royal Family, including the King and Queen, the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

Royal Ascot racegoers were a riot of colourful hats as they celebrated Ladies’ Day with a display of weird and wonderful designs.

Ostrich feathers, pipe-cleaner flowers and even a miniature chair were some of the creations worn on the heads of racing fans.

The Queen praised the sartorial elegance of the female racegoers, when quizzed about Royal Ascot’s charm: “Well it’s the best of British really, isn’t it.

“I mean it doesn’t matter whether you love horses, don’t know much about horses, you come here for a really good day to experience a bit of fun, the best racing in the world, the best horses – the elegant women.

“And I think, the world we live in, it’s wonderful just to get away and enjoy yourself and that’s what Ascot does. You get the pageantry and the procession – I love it, it’s five days of pleasure.”
