You’re cutting peppers wrong as chef’s method is quicker and easier

Peppers can be difficult to dice, with their hollow and unusual shape, and it can be difficult to separate the seeds from the parts of the vegetable you want to eat.

To help, chef Cameron Thomson has shared his ultimate tips on how to best cut a pepper, without getting seeds everywhere or wasting too much of the vegetable.

The chef has taken to his social media pages – where he has close to three and a half million followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube – to share the simple method to cut and deseed a pepper.

“One of the worst ways to dice a pepper is cutting straight through the core,” Chef Thomson said at the start of his video, claiming that while it does work, but complains that it leaves you with the seeds scattered everywhere.

He went on to say that this also makes it more difficult to remove the pit from the pepper, as the curvy shape of the pepper makes it rock back and forth as you try to cut it into pieces.

“Don’t even get me started on those people that smash it into the cutting board,” he continued. “Is that how you get out of your car? You just throw yourself onto the ground?”

While these methods technically work, the chef claimed the ‘better’ method of cutting a pepper was one he learned from other professional cooks and would produce a better end result.

He started off by removing the top and bottom parts of the pepper, leaving it so you can see through the hollow inside. He them went on to cut down on one side of the pepper before rolling the pepper on his knife, which allows the pit to come out with ease.

“Not a single seed falls onto the cutting board,” he noted, before continuing to show the rest of his method.

He went on to cut the long rectangular piece of pepper in half before carefully removing the access white parts from the core, before quickly chopping it into sticks, before turning them around to dice it.

“Not only are you going to get more consistent slices, but you’ve just created a better and more uniform product, and have saved yourself time by being more efficient,” Chef Thomson said. 

As for the top and bottom parts that you cut off at the beginning, he went on to show that you can just pop the green stalk out by pressing from the bottom. You can then continue top cut these pieces into the same shape as the rest of your pepper, minimising any food waste.

People soon took to the comment section of the video to share their thoughts, with many claiming this was already their preferred way of cutting a pepper

One person said: ” This is the only way our chef wants us to cut peppers. Says it generates the least amount of waste. I don’t agree but I say ‘yes chef’.”

Someone else went on to say: “Lol i thought everyone did this.”

However, not everyone agreed with the chef’s tips, as another viewer wrote: “Cut peppers any way you want.”
