Your home will be dust-free when 2 ingredients are mixed with vinegar

If you find yourself constantly battling dust accumulation on your surfaces despite regular cleaning efforts, a cleaning influencer believes she’s discovered the answer that will leave your home “dust-free”.

Heather Rhodes turned to TikTok to demonstrate to her 73,000 followers precisely how her “dust repellent spray” is made. First, she poured two cups of water (approximately 475ml) into a spray bottle, before adding three essential ingredients. The first – a quarter of a cup of vinegar (59ml) – is widely recognised as a popular “hack” in the cleaning world.

This is primarily down to its acetic acid content, which typically hovers around five per cent acidity. This gentle acidity enables it to readily dissolve hard-water deposits such as limescale, while cutting through grease and neutralising unpleasant odours.

Heather, for her part, mixed the water and vinegar with a tablespoon of olive oil and a drop of washing up liquid before setting to work. She then took a microfibre cloth and applied a small amount of her concoction onto it, ready to begin cleaning.

“It cleans and repels the dust away,” Heather enthused. “Repeat monthly for a dust-free home.”

Writing in response, one TikTok user advised: “Been using this for many years, way before TikTok. It is a once a month use, therefore, no build up.”

A second person enthused: “This helps the dust levels in our house with one dog/two cats.” And a third follower shared: “Thanks for sharing this hack. I dust and it lasts for a day. I started using this! And it works! I used it on my leather furniture, gone for two weeks, no dust when I got home! A miracle!”

Addressing sceptics, Heather was quick to clarify: “No, it doesn’t take away the dust [forever], dust is inevitable, BUT it prevents the dust from sticking to your surfaces making to fall to the ground for easy vacuuming.”

And when it comes to furniture, she insisted the solution works equally as well. “This solution repels the dust to the ground rather than sticking to your furniture!” Heather exclaimed. “Remember, cleaning is nothing but maintenance!”

Her advice is echoed by a writer from Apartment Therapy who reported her grandmother relies on vinegar, olive oil, and a small amount of soap to stop dust from accumulating in her property.

“The coating that the spray leaves on surfaces helps prevent dust from adhering and settling in, which means you’ll have to clean those hard-to-dust places a little less frequently,” she said.
