Replacing a broken boiler is not only incredibly frustrating but also breaks the bank.

The average cost of replacing one is around £2,300, but can be a little less or a whole lot more. If it can still be saved, however, repairs can be a few hundred pounds, too.

How much very much depends on a number of factors, including the type of boiler it is, the difficulty of the job, and the location of where the boiler would be installed.

It’s safe to say that we need to do all we can to make sure we protect our boilers and keep an eye out for any warning signs that may emerge.

Consumer champion Which?, in a viral video posted on its TikTok channel, has revealed five of the most common warning signs that could mean your boiler is on the brink.

Radiator issues

If you notice the radiators in your house are taking longer than usual to heat up, it could indicate a problem with your boiler.

There are various simple fixes you can do, like bleeding the radiators, which may help. However, persistent problems point towards serious issues.

Unusual smells

As soon as any weird smells or odours start coming from your boiler, you are in trouble. Getting a whiff of burning or gas is a very serious warning sign.

It could inidicate a carbon monoxide leak, which can be deadly.

Soaring energy bills

Everyone’s bills are soaring to record highs these days so this one may be quite difficult to notice. But if your gas bills are rising without any change in your usage patterns, it could be a sign of an inefficient boiler.

As a boiler gets older or starts to break, it will become less efficient over time which leads to higher energy consumption.

Water leaks

If you notice a water leak in the vicinity of your boiler, this is a worrying sign. Ignoring it can lead to further damage like rust or even structural damage.

This will also lead to a rise in energy costs. So beware.

Weird noises

Noises such as “banging, clunking or whistling” can indicate various issues with your boiler. These include worn out valves or pumps, to some more serious problems.

If you notice your boiler is showing any of the above warning signs then you may need to call in an engineer promptly.
