Yellow duvets will be white if you combine 2 ingredients
White pillows and duvets can make a bedroom feel clean and fresh. However, many people eventually notice yellow stains appearing on their bedding. It’s a common problem that often happens gradually over time.
Sweat, body oils, skincare products and hair treatments can all build up in fabric and leave behind discoloured patches. In some cases, hard water and infrequent washing can make the problem even worse. Many people turn to bleach to restore their bedding. But experts say there are gentler methods that can be just as effective.
According to bedding experts at Juniper, yellow stains can often be removed using ingredients many households already have at home.
One of the most effective methods involves baking soda and dish soap. The experts said these ingredients can help break down the oils and residue that cause yellow staining in the first place.
Unlike bleach, the method is less likely to damage cotton fibres. The process is particularly useful for pillowcases, but it can also be used on other bedding that has become discoloured.
The experts recommend filling a bathtub or a large bucket with warm water. Half a cup of baking soda and a quarter cup of clear dish soap should then be added and mixed into the water.
The bedding should be fully submerged and left to soak overnight.
The following day, it can be transferred to a washing machine and cleaned using regular detergent along with two cups of white vinegar.
After washing, the experts recommend drying the bedding outside in direct sunlight. Sunlight can naturally brighten fabrics and help remove lingering odours.
The experts at Juniper also shared several other ways to tackle yellow stains.
For really stubborn marks, the experts recommend mixing baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a paste.
This can be applied directly to stained areas and left for around 30 minutes before washing.
Another option is a mixture of lemon juice and white vinegar. The experts suggest soaking bedding in hot water with the juice of two lemons and one cup of white vinegar before washing as normal.
However, prevention is often easier than treatment. The bedding experts recommend washing pillowcases at least once a week to stop oils and sweat from building up in the fabric.
They also suggest showering before bed and avoiding excessive amounts of detergent, which can leave residue behind.
For fresh stains that have only recently appeared, the experts say a hot wash with detergent and baking soda is often enough to restore whiteness.
But for older stains, several treatments may be needed before the fabric returns to its original colour.
