Many people find it challenging to maintain a tidy home, and this becomes even more difficult for those also battling health issues. One woman has shared how she became completely incapable of cleaning her property after receiving a devastating health diagnosis – and how she managed to overcome the situation.
Posting on Reddit, the woman revealed she had been diagnosed with autoimmune condition lupus last year, and had undergone chemotherapy for the previous six months, which had “knocked me right down to the point where I’m in bed most of the day.” “My house fell apart,” she stated. “It was really bad, everything you looked at was dirty, grimy, untidy, no clean plates to eat off, trash piled high, no space to cook.

“It all just piled up while I’ve been in bed with a sick bucket. On the better days when I’ve been able to get downstairs I’ve just walked in my kitchen and then straight out again in despair, like where do I even start?
“I even declined a visit from a nurse who’s starting me on new meds because I was so embarrassed. Then on the days where I did have energy and some get up and go, my legs don’t work and I can/could barely stand.”
She went on to explain that her former partner had offered to fund a cleaner to visit, and had organised for “a lovely lady” to spend six hours tidying up her property, reports the Mirror. “She brought her daughter, they even stayed and extra hour and a half to finish up for free,” she added.
“She was so, so kind. I was so worried about being judged but I couldn’t have been more wrong, she gave me a big hug and sent me off to bed haha.”
The woman expressed the relief she felt as “incredible”, stating: “I feel like I can breathe again! My house is transformed, I was absolutely stunned – everything looks brand new, no clutter, everything sparkly and organised.
“She really went over and above for me, even rearranged my cabinets so I can reach plates if I’m not steady on my feet and found a nice chair for the corner of the kitchen so I can rest as I cook. I woke up this morning with no guilt about being in bed while I should be cleaning. She’s given me a clean slate so I can do a little each day to keep on top of it.”
In conclusion, she advised: “Just wanted to share if anyone has doubts about asking for help, it’s not as daunting as you’d think!”
In a subsequent comment, she elaborated further. “After Friday she’s coming every other week for an hour or so, new treatment starts next week so it will either go really well or really bad,” she revealed.
“But I can’t tell you enough how relieved I feel. But she will come sooner if needed.”
Users empathised with the woman’s plight. One commented: “You poor thing. I know how you are feeling. I have MS and last week had surgery to remove cancer. I haven’t been out to look at my house for two weeks.
“Just thinking about the dust is so upsetting to me. I hope I can find someone to help me out soon.”
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can lead to a variety of symptoms, such as joint and muscle pain and severe fatigue, according to the NHS. In the most severe instances, it can inflict significant harm to vital organs like the heart, brain, lungs, or kidneys.
The exact causes remain unclear, but it is more prevalent in women and individuals of African, Caribbean, Asian, or Chinese descent. Treatment options may encompass anti-inflammatory medications, along with steroid tablets, injections, and creams.
