Cat lovers have been left stunned after a woman revealed how her cat developed an extraordinary bond with one of her Halloween pumpkins.

Kat Newquist has gained more than two million followers on TikTok by regularly documenting the unusual and amusing aspects of taking care for three indoor cats called Dave, Gandalf, and Natilla.

Whilst most pet owners understand that cat ownership brings bizarre and unusual situations, including managing their unpredictable behaviours and moods, viewers were astounded after witnessing one of Kat’s cats forming an emotional attachment to a Halloween decoration.

Since Dave was experiencing his first ever autumn in Kat’s household, he quickly discovered her passion for adorning her home with pumpkins throughout the Halloween period.

Yet he appeared unbothered by it, as he seemed to gain a special bond to one particular pumpkin even more than Kat herself.

“Four years ago, my cat Dave fell in love with a pumpkin,” the caption stated at the beginning of the clip, which showed Dave resting with the other two cats on the floor before sitting up to get closer the pumpkin in question.

Kat continued to describe how she purchases numerous pumpkins each autumn to embellish her residence. However, in 2021, during Dave’s first autumn, she was bewildered when the ginger moggy became emotionally attached to one of the pumpkins.

“But Dave, for reasons known only for Dave, chose to hyperfixate on just one particular pumpkin,” Kat said, explaining the green and yellow striped pumpkin was the only non-orange pumpkin they’d acquired and soon became Dave’s new obsession.

She went on to reveal: “Dave began to spend all of this free time in the pumpkin’s presence, usually while actually maintaining physical contact with it.”

Dave became so devoted to his pumpkin that he would even ward off his mother and sister if he sensed they were encroaching too close to the gourd.

The comments section was quickly flooded with astonished cat enthusiasts, many expressing their wonder at the feline’s connection with his ’emotional support’ pumpkin.

“He recognises a fellow orange being,” one user remarked, whilst another commented: “Big fan of whatever’s wrong with dave.”

“The pumpkin lore just keeps getting deeper! Dave the Cat always delivers the unexpected,” penned a third user.

Another person proposed: “Cats see yellow, green and blue the best. That’s why he likes that one.”

Why do cats become attached to random objects?

According to veterinarians at Catster, it’s neither unusual nor worrying for cats to begin collecting or forming attachments to items, as they maintain it’s part of their instinct. Nevertheless, there are certain instances when it ought to be tackled and prevented.

Some felines may hoard items due to resource guarding. Resource guarding is more prevalent in households with multiple cats or pets.

It happens when a cat feels their resources are under threat, leading them to hoard these resources. They often become aggressive when others approach their resources.

If you’re worried about your pet’s health and well-being, it’s best to seek advice from a vet.
