Woman adopts ‘oldest dog in shelter’ and can’t believe what happened

When a woman took in the ‘oldest dog in the shelter,’ she never imagined what lay ahead. Olivia Hodgson wanted to offer a fresh start to a loveable Labrador called Oscar when she decided to adopt him from Thornberry Animal Sanctuary.

The fortunate canine had only spent a fortnight there before Olivia, from Sheffield, spotted him and instantly knew he was meant for her.

Oscar was 11 years and eight months old when Olivia selected him, confessing she initially thought she’d “have a few months with him” as a Labrador’s lifespan typically ranges from 10 to 14 years.

Nevertheless, she was utterly delighted that Oscar remained in excellent health over two years on, and that he was approaching 13 years old.

When she posted his story on TikTok, she commented: “Oscar’s taught us so much already about slowing down and taking a hold on life. I’m so proud of all of us he’s doing so well, and it just shows what love can do.”

Olivia revealed that “his favourite things are pup cups, sausages from the chippy, yummy treats and walks with mum and dad”.

He also adores visiting his “nana and grandad,” and she uploaded a photograph of her mother with Oscar together, which was heartwarming.

Despite being an elderly dog, Olivia explained he’s still remarkably energetic and relishes getting out and exploring with them. She told Newsweek: “To say he’s a senior, he has a bunch of character. He is just pure joy. He doesn’t have a bad bone in his body-he just loves everyone and everything.”

Olivia also observed his paw pads were “just like a puppy’s,” suggesting he may have been neglected earlier in life and not received adequate exercise.

Healthy adult Labradors need between 60 and 90 minutes of exercise each day, with many requiring up to two hours to remain physically fit and mentally engaged.

In the comments section, people encouraged her to remain optimistic about how many years Oscar might have left.

One woman wrote: “Don’t count them out! My doggo was almost 17 when he passed, and he was a big boy.”

A second penned: “I believe your love added years to his life. Praying for more comfy years for your baby.”

While a third asked about the cost of insuring an elderly dog, as they were keen to do the same. She asked: “I really want to do this, but is the insurance for the dog huge at that age? Or does the animal charity cover any vet bills?”

Olivia responded: “We pay £16 a month, and that’s with £100 excess and 10% of claim paid by us. We don’t have any help from the animal charity, but I know you can foster senior dogs and they pay the vet bills”.

She later clarified she arranged Oscar’s insurance through Perfect Pet.
