He’s had a tough beginning, but rescuers are determined to give him a second chance.

Gary, a two-year-old crossbreed, has been taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue after being found in a dire state, struggling to breathe or lift his head due to the viral disease distemper, which affects the nervous system and has a 50% survival rate.

A rescue worker said: “Gary was one of the lucky ones that pulled through however he has been left with a life long, and very noticeable twitch, in his back left leg.

“He can be a little wobbly at times when walking but it doesn’t let it affect him in the slightest and he is just the happiest, fluffy little dog that craves all the love and cuddles.”

As Gary recovers from his health issues, the Hull team is working to find him a new home. They say he can live with children aged 12 and can be left for four to five hours as long as he has something to keep him occupied.

He can’t live with other dogs but can live with confident cats.

A rehoming statement reads: “So far Gary has shown that he prefers not to be in the company of other dogs. With him being so small, it is likely he was bullied in the shelter and doesn’t feel safe around them.

“We will continue to assess Gary with other dogs by mixing him with some of our current residents but for now, he will be available for adoption as an only dog.”

Social media users have rallied around Gary, a dog who has begun treatment after a tough diagnosis. One Facebook user expressed their support.

They said: “So pleased that Gary has a diagnosis and treatment has started. He seems such a resilient boy. Sending healing hugs to Gary. And thank you for all you do.”

Another added their blessings: “God bless you and your volunteers! Adorable little guy!”.

A third cheered on the canine: “Well done Gary, keep fighting buddy.”

While another comment celebrated the good news: “That’s great news and he is adorable.”

Oakwood Dog Rescue is dedicated to finding forever homes for animals left without one, whether they come from homes, shelters, vets, boarding facilities or are found on the streets.

Their mission statement declares: “Placing them in the best possible permanent loving homes. Oakwood Dog Rescue promotes health and rehabilitation for animals during their care and future placements.”

They also aim to “Increase public awareness of the value of animals as pets and bring to the fore the over population issue taking positive steps to act within their sphere of influence.”
