Who Is Sam Barber? ‘American Music Awards’ New Country Artist

Last year, Sam Barber talked to Rolling Stone about his approach to country songwriting. “It’s art. It’s painting something,” he told RS then. “When you paint a picture, you’re painting something that you’re gonna want to stare at for a while.”

On Monday night, country music fans made it clear they’re down to stare. Barber, a Missouri native who calls Bozeman, Montana, home, was named Breakthrough Country Artist at the 2026 American Music Awards, beating out Tucker Wetmore, the ACM Awards’ New Male Artist of the Year; and Zach Top, the CMAs’ New Artist of the Year for 2025. Barber wasn’t nominated in either organization’s new artist categories, which probably had some mainstream country fans wondering exactly who was the young man in the suit.

Of course, the AMAs are entirely fan voted, while the CMAs and the ACMs use a voting body of industry members to select their nominees and winners. But Barber’s victory at the AMAs is notable for illustrating how he is cultivating a grassroots fan base largely outside of the traditional Music Row system — not with radio play but through streaming and nonstop touring. While he’s currently signed to a major label, Atlantic Outpost, and released his latest album, Broken View, in April, he first broke through in 2022 with a pair of singles he posted to TikTok, “Ramblin’ Man” and “Straight and Narrow.” The latter went viral and double platinum, and teed up another platinum single, “Indigo,” a collab between Barber and Avery Anna (who happens to be the reigning ACMs New Female Artist of the Year).

Now, he’s been dropping a series of stripped-down live performance videos. One, “Man You Raised,” even features his mom seated next to him.

Onstage at the American Music Awards, Barber, nondescript in his suit and without his usual baseball cap, hit all the country hallmarks in his speech, thanking veterans on Memorial Day, the “Lord above,” and the fans who helped elevate his profile with a win on national television.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Barber posted on Instagram later. “You all are the reason I can call this my job. I don’t even know what to say.”

He’ll probably know what to write, however.

The other winners in the country music categories at the 2026 AMAs included Morgan Wallen for Best Male Country Artist, Ella Langley for Best Female Country Artist, and Zac Brown Band for Best Country Duo or Group. Megan Moroney’s Cloud 9 was voted Best Country Album, while Langley’s crossover hit “Choosin’ Texas” was voted Best Country Song.

The American Music Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media Corporation, the parent company of Rolling Stone.
