Where was the new Knives Out movie filmed? | Films | Entertainment
The third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, has finally been released on Netflix after previously landing in cinemas late last month. While the Rian Johnson murder mystery movie is set in the fictional small town of Chimney Rock in upstate New York, most of the filming actually occurred in the UK.
The film, which stars Josh O’Connor as the naive but kind-hearted priest Rev. Jud Duplenticy mainly takes place inside a stunning Neo-Gothic church as well as the English countryside, which doubles as the Hudson Valley.
Wake Up Dead Man also sees James Bond star Daniel Craig reprise his role as Detective Benoit Blanc, who works alongside Jud to solve a seemingly impossible murder case.
Other case members include Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Kerry Washington and Andrew Scott.
The synopsis reads: “Detective Benoit Blanc teams up with an earnest young priest to investigate a perfectly impossible crime at a small-town church with a dark history.”
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set in upstate New York and follows the residents of fictional small town, Chimney Rock.
However, in reality the new Knives Out movie was predominantly filmed in the UK.
Last summer, camera crews headed to Epping Forest, where the Holy Innocents Church at High Beach stood in as the fictional Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude.
The church vicar, Reverend Jane Yeadon, is a huge fan of the series and asked that her presence on set be written into the contract so that she could help protect the small 19th century church during filming.
Production Designer Rick Heinrichs previously admitted to press that it was “devilishly hard to find a church [in England] that didn’t look at least several centuries too old for a U.S. church”.
He added: “In the research of American churches though, I did find a tradition of neo-Gothic/Victorian age, mid-19-century American churches that overlapped with a few of the candidate UK churches that we had identified.”
Explaining why the team landed on Holy Innocents Church, he said: “Besides checking the plausibility box, it had a storybook-like charm in its arboreal setting within an old graveyard that seemed to support Rian’s intent.”
Meanwhile, the interior of the church was built entirely from scratch by the film crew because the real church interior was “too small for the job”.
Other filming locations included the town of Cold Spring – an hour north of New York City – which serves as inspiration for the town of Chimney Rock. Shots of the area are used as the backdrop in some transition shots.
Meanwhile, a house on an estate in Guildford, Surrey, was used for Vera Draven’s (Kerry Washington) estate and the Wicks mausoleum and groundskeeper’s cabin were also built from scratch in the Winterfold Forest in Surrey.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is available to stream now on Netflix.
