What it really means if your dog wags its tail — not always happy

Many of us who own or love dogs know that they have different ways of expressing themselves. While some might find it totally charming or slightly irritating, a dog’s lick is laden with significance, according to an expert.

Vet Dr Julian Norton, representing Pure Pet Food, said: “People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nuzzle with their noses. Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they’re trying to get attention by nuzzling you.”

These actions are not without purpose, they signify your dog’s attempt to forge a connection with you. Dr Norton continued: “It’s quite endearing. I think it’s a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They’re just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention.”

The vet points out that licking often represents a form of bonding or emotional check-in. Whether it’s a soft lick on the hand or a more exuberant one on the face, your dog might be assessing your mood. It’s their way of expressing “I care”.

However, licking is merely one of the numerous methods dogs use to express themselves and interact with their owners. Tail wagging is another behaviour frequently misinterpreted.

Many people believe that a wagging tail always means a dog is content, but the truth is more nuanced. The height, speed and rigidity of the wag can convey a range of emotions from happiness to apprehension.

A high, relaxed wag typically signals excitement, whereas a low, sluggish wag could indicate unease or wariness.

What’s even more astonishing is that dogs can appear to “smile” when they’re in a playful or contented state. Although it’s not identical to a human smile, some canines curl up their lips in a way that bears a striking resemblance to a grin.

When accompanied by relaxed body language and a wagging tail, this facial expression is a tell-tale sign of a happy dog.

These understated cues, ranging from licks to wagging tails to smiling faces, all contribute to a stronger bond between you and your dog.

By deciphering them, you can foster a deeper connection and a more joyful, self-assured dog.
