Weighted anxiety blanket for dogs ‘provides comfort during fireworks’

This time of year can be tricky for dogs and other pets due to fireworks displays and a change in seasons. Now, however, pet owners are heading to Amazon to get a solution for their furry friends to help reduce anxiety.

The LaSyL Weighted Blanket for Pets is now available for its lowest price in 30 days, making it £35.52, down from £40.37, on the site. The blanket comes in three different sizes – small (24″x32″) for £27.65, medium (32″x40″) and large (40″x47″) for £58.71. 

Available in colours grey and blue with stars or dark grey, there is an option for all pets, depending on preferences and sizes. The blanket itself is designed with 12 layers that are said to evenly distribute weight to the shape of pets’ bodies, which then helps them to calm down, mellow out and fall asleep under the weight of the blanket. 

According to Amazon, this blanket is double-sided, featuring a ‘soft minky fabric’. It is also machine washable in cold water, and can be tumble dried, ironed quickly or steam cleaned when needed.

PetsAtHome also has its ThundersShirt Calming Coat Jacket for Dogs for £28.80, which is available in sizes XS to XL. This jacket is said to have a ‘unique patented design calming wrap’ that works just like swaddling a baby or using a weighted blanket. 

Boots also has the ADAPTIL Calm Home Diffuser Starter Kit For Dogs for £18.74, down from £24.99. The diffuser is a ‘discrete and effective plug-in’ that fills homes with a reproduction of the canine appeasing pheromone, which is a natural product proven to calm and comfort both puppies and adult dogs, the brand says.

The LaSyL weighted blanket has been rated a high 4.6 out of five stars, from more than 500 reviews on Amazon. One person said: “Omg! I love this blanket! I have a wonderful sweet 95 pound American Staffy. He is terrified of thunder. I bought this hoping it would help. It exceed my expectations. The second the thunder starts, we wrap him in his “boomy blankie”, he relaxes and goes to sleep. I would have paid double! It is very well made and very cute. If you have a dog that is fearful for any reason, buy this blanket. Best thing you can do for your beloved pet and you.”

A second wrote: “The blanket actually worked. My dog was calm during the storm.” A third person commented: “I have an anxious poodle. This blanket is a game-changer. She loves the blanket and so do I.”

Not every product will be suitable for every animal, and some owners deducted a star. One person said: “The item appears well-made and heavy. Getting my dog to stay covered up with it is a different matter altogether, so I can’t say whether or not it helps his anxiety.” Another wrote: “This is a very well-made product. The blanket is soft and of high-quality material. It is well constructed. The only negative is that is must be hand washed and cannot be placed in the dryer.”
