Warner Bros ‘set to lose almost $200 million’ on two Hollywood blockbuster flops | Films | Entertainment
The movie industry can be a huge gamble, especially when dealing with auteur directors.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners won four Oscars on a record 16 Academy Award nominations and was a critical and box office success for Warner Bros.
However, the Hollywood studio, which is set to sell to Paramount Pictures, can’t win them all.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, a black comedy thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, took home six Oscars, including Best Picture, on Sunday night.
Yet the blockbuster made just $209 million on a budget of up to $175 million, meaning it’s expected to lose Warner Bros a whopping $100 million.
If that wasn’t enough, Variety’s studio sources predict a similar loss for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.
Having made only $28 million on a $90 million budget, the film is expected to lose around $90 million after marketing costs are factored in.
