Vet names the 3 dog breeds most likely to bite – not pit bulls

Pit bulls and rottweilers are often the breeds that come to mind when people think of aggressive dogs, but one vet has revealed three surprising breeds he claims are far more likely to try and bite.
Amir the Vet has sparked debate online after sharing the dog breeds he is most cautious around while treating patients at his veterinary surgery.
The popular social media vet told followers: “Most people would not expect this! But these are the breeds that have tried to bite me most often.” His list quickly divided opinion among dog owners, with many surprised by the breeds he named.

Chihuahua
Topping Amir’s list was the chihuahua, one of the smallest dog breeds in the world.
Originally bred in Mexico, chihuahuas are known for their fearless personalities, fierce loyalty and strong attachment to their owners despite often weighing less than 6lbs.
While they may look harmless, Amir suggested their protective instincts can sometimes make them more likely to snap when they feel threatened or uncomfortable, particularly in stressful environments such as a veterinary clinic.
Chihuahuas are often wary of strangers and can become defensive when being handled by unfamiliar people.
Chow Chow
The second breed on Amir’s list was the chow chow.
Known for their distinctive lion-like mane and unusual blue-black tongue, chow chows originated in China and were historically used as guard dogs, hunting dogs and even for pulling carts.
The breed is widely regarded as independent and reserved, often showing affection primarily towards its family rather than strangers.
Because of their naturally protective nature, chow chows can be suspicious of unfamiliar people, making some more likely to react defensively during examinations or stressful situations.
Cocker Spaniel
Perhaps the most surprising entry was the cocker spaniel.
With their floppy ears, friendly appearance and reputation as affectionate family pets, cocker spaniels are one of the UK’s most popular dog breeds.
Originally bred as hunting dogs, they are known for being intelligent, energetic and eager to please.
However, some experts have previously discussed a rare condition known as “cocker rage syndrome”, which has been linked to sudden aggressive outbursts in a small number of dogs.
Amir’s inclusion of the breed shocked many viewers, with some admitting they never expected cocker spaniels to make the list.
One social media user commented: “Never met a friendly cocker spaniel or chow chow.”
Another added: “I dunno every time someone’s told me their chihuahua is evil and I’m in its presence it’s somehow a miracle it’s sitting beside me all happy.”
A third disagreed with the vet’s assessment, writing: “I have four English cocker spaniels and they never bite anyone.”
The video has reignited discussion about whether certain breeds are naturally more aggressive than others, with many owners arguing that a dog’s behaviour depends largely on its upbringing, training and individual temperament rather than breed alone.
Animal behaviour experts generally stress that any dog can bite if it feels frightened, threatened, unwell or under stress. Factors such as socialisation, environment, training and previous experiences often play a significant role in how a dog reacts to people and unfamiliar situations.
