Vet explains the real meaning behind your dog’s licking

While some may consider it endearing and others mildly annoying, an expert has revealed that a dog licking you carries real meaning. Vet Dr Julian Norton, speaking on behalf of Pure Pet Food, explains: “People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nozzle with their noses.

“Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they’re trying to get attention by nuzzling you.” These behaviours aren’t random – they represent your dog’s way of forming a connection with you. Dr Norton adds: “It’s quite endearing. I think it’s a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They’re just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention.”

According to the vet, licking commonly acts as a sign of bonding or an emotional check-in, reports The Mirror.

“Whether it’s a tender lick on the hand or an enthusiastic one on the face, your dog could be attempting to gauge your mood. It’s their way of expressing ‘I care’.”

Nevertheless, licking is just one of many ways dogs express themselves and communicate with their owners. Tail wagging is another behaviour that is commonly misunderstood.

While many assume a wagging tail indicates a happy dog, the reality is considerably more complex. The height, speed and stiffness of the wag can convey everything from joy to apprehension.

A high, relaxed wag typically signals excitement, whereas a low, sluggish wag might suggest anxiety or unease. Perhaps most remarkably, dogs may genuinely “smile” when experiencing playfulness or contentment.

While it differs from a human expression, certain dogs retract their lips in a way that bears striking resemblance to one.

When this gesture appears alongside calm body language and a wagging tail, it’s an unmistakable indication that your canine companion is feeling cheerful.

These nuanced signals – from licking to tail movements to grins – all contribute to reinforcing the relationship between you and your pet.

Understanding how to interpret them can result in a considerably stronger connection, and ultimately, a more contented and self-assured dog.
