If you’re looking for a gripping World War II film that has somehow flown under the radar, this one is a must-watch. This Norwegian historical drama, directed by Erik Skjoldbjærg, tells the story of the Battles of Narvik in 1940, a critical yet often overlooked chapter of WWII in which Germany suffered its first major defeat. The film follows Corporal Gunnar Tofte, a Norwegian soldier, who returns home just as German forces invade Narvik.

What begins as a tale of survival and military strategy quickly evolves into a gripping story of love, loyalty, and moral dilemmas. His wife, Ingrid, finds herself caught between helping the occupiers and protecting her family, leading to choices that have dramatic consequences.

The Netflix synopsis reads: “Against the backdrop of the WWII battle known as Hitler’s first defeat, a Norwegian soldier returns home and learns a shocking truth about his wife.”

Starring Kristine Hartgen, Carl Martin Eggesbø, Cristoph Gelfert Mathiesen, and Henrik Mestad, Narvik combines tense combat sequences with deeply human moments, exploring how war impacts ordinary people.

Released in Norway on Christmas Day 2022, Narvik quickly became the country’s most-watched film of the year, drawing over 400,000 viewers. Netflix picked it up for worldwide streaming in January 2023, allowing audiences around the globe to discover this lesser-known gem.

The film has a perfect 100% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 78% audience score on the Popcornmeter.

One fan said about the film on Rotten Tomatoes: “One of the best war movies I’ve watched! Amazing!”

Another added: “Excellent story, great movie. One of the finest Euro WWII movies made. The love story was superb as well.”

Someone else wrote: “A very realistic film on the battle at Narvik. It’s worth seeing in many respects; the acting and all aspects of creating a fierce drama of this genre are all here. BTW I cried through most of it.”
