UK’s favourite supermarket named out of Tesco, M&S, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose
Britain’s favourite supermarket has been named – and it’s Aldi that has come out on top, beating rivals including Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons. Thousands of shoppers weighed in on where they really love to do their weekly shop, with the German discount chain revealed as the best overall.
The results come from the Good Housekeeping Good Eating Food Awards, which saw more than 1,600 UK readers vote on everything from value for money and fresh produce to premium ranges and in-store experience. Aldi was named Favourite Supermarket, earning praise for its affordability and quality produce. One reader told Good Housekeeping: “I find Aldi really convenient to shop, and the staff are always super friendly,” with wine and seasonal products singled out as particular highlights.
Those views were echoed by results from the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Taste Approved testing. Aldi’s Specially Selected Mozzarella & Sun-Dried Cherry Tomato Pizza scored an impressive 85/100, while Gianni’s Mango Sorbet Ice Cream Tub achieved 84/100.
Aldi also picked up the title of Best Value Supermarket, with shoppers praising its consistently low prices without compromising on quality. As one voter summed it up: “They don’t do meal deals – they just sell good products at great prices.”
Sainsbury’s finished runner-up in both categories.”
The 2026 awards expanded to 24 categories for the first time, including supermarkets, chain restaurants and food delivery services. To ensure results reflected nationwide experiences, voting was limited to UK-wide chains with 30 or more locations.
Callum Black, deputy head of testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, said the awards looked at “all the ways our readers shop and eat,” highlighting the best places for value, fresh produce, premium ranges and drinks.
