UK’s cheapest supermarket where each shop costs £24 less than Tesco

Choosing where to do your weekly food shop could make a bigger difference than many shoppers realise. Recent figures show that the UK’s cheapest supermarket comes in around £24 less per trip than Tesco for a comparable basket of groceries.

Over time, that price gap can translate into substantial annual savings for households looking to cut everyday costs. The new research from Which? reveals Aldi was the UK’s cheapest supermarket in February for a basket of 89 popular grocery items. This comes in at £23.93 cheaper than Morrisons.

However, shopping the same basket at Sainsbury’s costs £27.62 more while shoppers would have paid an extra £55.46 at Waitrose.

Aldi has also recently been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for 2025 and topped the consumer group’s rankings again in January, reinforcing its reputation for consistently low prices — even when compared with a bargain-hunting trip overseas.

Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, Julie Ashfield, said: “These findings show that shoppers don’t need to travel abroad to make real savings on their weekly shop.

“With Aldi topping the Which? charts once again, UK households can stretch their budgets further every week – and even save enough over time to treat themselves to a holiday.”

February’s cheapest supermarkets

When comparing the cost of 89 everyday items, Aldi offers the lowest total at £161.56, closely followed by Lidl at £162.75. These two discount retailers remain noticeably cheaper than their larger competitors.

Among the other middle-range supermarkets, Asda comes in at £181.06. Tesco totals £181.58 when its loyalty discount is applied, but this figure increases to £185.93 without the savings. Morrisons is priced at £185.49, placing it in a similar range.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s costs £186.21 with its loyalty scheme factored in, rising to £189.18 without it. At the higher end of the scale, Ocado reaches £203.59, while Waitrose is the most expensive overall, at £217.02 for the same basket of goods.
