UK town named the best place for a ‘happy later life’

Deciding where to settle after retirement is an enormously significant decision, influenced by numerous different considerations. While you might favour being at the heart of the action in a bustling city throughout your working years, you may well prefer somewhere rather quieter and more rural once you’ve retired.

Everyone will hold their own views on what constitutes the ideal retirement location. However, certain places in Scotland are regarded as particularly popular amongst retirees, with one having previously been crowned the finest in the nation. Specialists at Legal and General compiled a ranking of the leading areas across Great Britain for retirees, with Mid Dunbartonshire securing the top position for Scotland. Located just north of Glasgow, Mid Dunbartonshire is a constituency encompassing numerous wards within the East Dunbartonshire council area.

Legal and General assessed a total of 632 constituencies throughout Britain according to factors including housing, healthcare, local communities, finances, green spaces, and amenities. Each location was subsequently allocated an overall score out of 100, with Mid Dunbartonshire achieving a rating of 55.

The specialists awarded the Scottish constituency impressive ratings in areas such as finances and social and community engagement. The former received a score of 87 out of 100 from Legal and General, while the latter was granted a marginally lower rating of 79 out of 100 by the specialists, reports the Daily Record.

Legal and General specifically highlighted Lennoxtown as a prime retirement destination within Mid Dunbartonshire. Nestled just south of the breathtaking Campsie Fells, this charming small town boasts a population of roughly 4,300 and is well known for its spectacular scenery and tranquil surroundings.

When it comes to scenic walking routes near Lennoxtown, the Campsie Fells dominate the horizon and remain a firm favourite for those seeking an invigorating stroll. For visitors preferring a gentler outing amongst the natural landscape, a number of more leisurely trails and pathways wind through the surrounding hills.

Lennoxtown offers a broad selection of dining and drinking establishments, catering for everything from a warming cup of coffee to a freshly prepared meal. Notable spots include Cafe Lucy, fish and chip shop Olivias, and Indian takeaway Bhaji’s – all located in the town centre.

The town’s convenient positioning makes it particularly appealing for those who still require straightforward access to a broader range of services and facilities. It sits a short drive from the M80 motorway, with regular bus connections to Glasgow and numerous neighbouring towns and villages.

Elsewhere in Mid Dunbartonshire, Bearsden was also identified by Legal and General as an outstanding place to spend one’s retirement years. Located approximately six miles from Glasgow city centre, Bearsden is a prosperous, tree-lined town with a population of around 28,000.

The specialists highlighted Bearsden as perfect for those seeking a suburban way of life during retirement, while also praising its warm community spirit and available housing stock. Beyond providing convenient links to Glasgow, Bearsden boasts numerous shops offering an extensive range of products.

Amongst the area’s most popular dining and drinking establishments are Massimo and The Station. Massimo has been delivering authentic Italian cuisine for over a decade, while The Station is a sophisticated venue where patrons can savour hot meals and refreshing beverages in an elegant atmosphere.

According to Legal and General, the second-best location in Scotland for retirement is Stirling and Strathallan, which achieved an overall rating of 52 out of 100. Further down the list were East Renfrewshire and West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, both securing a score of 51.
