A ‘thrilling’ horror film that enthusiasts claim is ‘not for those looking for cheap thrills’ is now available on Netflix.

The title, Cellar Door, has only just been added to the streaming platform’s constantly updated catalogue from today (February 16).

Initially released in cinemas back in 2024, it is now accessible for subscribers to view for themselves.

According to its synopsis, the narrative centres on a couple seeking a new beginning who receive their ideal home as a gift, in the shape of a stunning property.

Nevertheless, it arrives with an enigmatic condition from the previous and affluent proprietor.

The single requirement they must adhere to is that they must never open the cellar door. Their inquisitiveness quickly puts strain on their relationship and reveals the property’s sinister mysteries.

Cellar Door’s cast is headed by Animal Kingdom and Teacup actor Scott Speedman and star of Fast and Furious franchise Jordana Brewster. They are accompanied by Laurence Fishburne, recognised for his portrayal of Morpheus in The Matrix films, reports the Mirror.

Whilst the picture may have garnered predominantly mixed responses from critics, there are numerous enthusiasts who offer their endorsement, and suggest that it merits anyone’s attention.

One reviewer characterised the picture as “a twisty thriller that’s more unsettling than horrifying”. Another highlighted a subject of discussion amongst reviews and enthusiasts; the twist ending.

They wrote: “Cellar Door teases an intriguing thriller with high-quality performances and talented stars, but the end result didn’t quite reach its potential.”

Most enthusiasts argue that the film isn’t your typical horror flick, relying less on jump scares or graphic violence and more on psychologically unsettling its audience.

One viewer contended: “This movie is about the human psyche and is not for those looking for cheap thrills. I thought this was brilliantly executed with the twists and turns as the story unfolded. I felt the love between John and Sera, the betrayal, and the cost of risking everything for the life we’ve always wanted.”

Another chimed in: “This movie truly played with your mind. A movie filled with thrilling twists and turns. Who did what, who said what, and where did they go? I did not expect this movie to be this entertaining. Every 5 minutes there was something thrilling happening. But the ending, I did not expect the ending at all. I don’t want to write any spoilers, but 100% you should see it!”.

Meanwhile, another fan declared: “Love how unusual this is, it is ultimately much more horrific in a more plausible way. Great acting, just watch ready to be surprised. Not a regular horror but I was gripped from the start onwards.”

Cellar Door is streaming on Netflix.
