The film will follow the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who was convicted in the 1996 death of the hip-hop legend

A documentary about the Tupac Shakur murder trial leading to the conviction of Duane “Keffe D” Davis is in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Marian Mohamed-directed film will trace the Las Vegas trial in which the jury found Davis guilty on Aug. 30, convicting him of first-degree murder in the nearly 30-year-old killing of the hip-hop legend. The true crime doc, which will feature interviews with members of the Shakur family, is expected to come out on Sky Documentaries and streaming platform NOW in 2027.

The late rapper’s brother and collaborator Mopreme Shakur is one of the film’s participants, along with other individuals who were close to Tupac. It’s also expected to feature previously unseen footage and stills provided by Shakur’s family and confidantes. The film will open with the first day of evidence and chronicles the trial on through the verdict and sentencing of Davis, which is scheduled for Oct. 13.

“I want this film to give a voice to a family who are not just grieving, but who have taken back agency in how the murder of Tupac is viewed,” Mohamed said of her upcoming documentary in a statement to THR. “Most importantly, I want this film to make people laugh and cry and argue. I want whoever watches this to emotionally connect with not just the story of how Tupac died but with who he was.”

The 1996 murder of Shakur was one of the most notorious unsolved killings in music history. The Las Vegas jury only took three hours to convict Davis of first-degree murder, a verdict that was celebrated by Shakur’s family, who were present when the verdict was read. Asked if he had any message for the rapper’s family, Davis told Hollywood Reporter, “I ain’t got nothing to say to them. I didn’t like the way they was looking at me – like they was ready to beat me up. And I didn’t like the way the prosecutors kept bringing them in the back room where the jury was. That felt biased to me.”
