Toilet limescale will vanish in 1 hour if you clean with 1 kitchen item

Homeowners are being urged to raid their kitchen cupboards for an everyday item that can make stubborn toilet stains disappear in just one hour, and it’s not bleach or vinegar. Cleaning experts have revealed that cola, the fizzy drink found in most households, can be used to remove limescale from toilet bowls quickly and effectively.

Limescale, which often appears as brown, green, or black stains,  is caused by a build-up of minerals such as calcium and magnesium found in hard water. When water evaporates, these minerals remain, forming hard deposits that can be difficult to clean.

While many people rely on traditional products such as white vinegar, baking soda, or chemical limescale removers, Andrea Philips, from Airtasker’s lifestyle editorial team, says cola can do the job just as well, if not better.

“It’s been well documented with videos that cola can help clean the toilet bowl,” she explained. “To clean it, pour cola around the inside of the toilet bowl and leave for an hour or so. Then flush and use the toilet brush to remove.”

If the stains are particularly thick, Philips recommends leaving the cola to sit overnight for best results. She also suggests pouring it around the inner rim of the toilet, where limescale often builds up the most.

The trick works because of cola’s high acidity. With a pH level of around 2.8, similar to lemon juice or vinegar, the drink’s phosphoric acid helps dissolve limescale and mineral deposits.

Cola’s cleaning potential doesn’t stop there. It’s also been used to descale kettles, remove mould and grime from tile grout, and even clean car windscreens.

A spokesperson from Plumbworld called the method a “budget-friendly hack”, noting that it’s ideal for households looking to save money on cleaning products. However, they added that only full-sugar cola should be used, not diet or sugar-free alternatives.

“For best results, make sure to use regular cola, not diet or sugar-free versions, as these contain less phosphoric acid, which is key to dissolving limescale,” the expert said.

They also advised that slightly warming the cola before pouring it into the toilet can boost its cleaning power. “Warm acid works faster on stubborn deposits,” they added.

However, the experts warned that cola should not be used to descale coffee machines or other appliances where the liquid cannot be thoroughly rinsed, as it could leave behind a sticky residue.

For households battling unsightly toilet stains, though, cola offers an easy, low-cost fix — with impressive results in as little as an hour.
