Tim McGraw Inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame: Speech, Lady A

Tim McGraw couldn’t help but marvel at the interconnectedness of the biggest night of his career. Onstage at the CMA Theater in Nashville on Sunday, the brand new member of the Country Music Hall of Fame drew a clear line from his fellow inductees the Stanley Brothers and Paul Overstreet to his first day arriving in Nashville from his hometown of Start, Louisiana: May 9, 1989.

It was the same day that Keith Whitley, McGraw’s musical hero and a former member of Ralph Stanley’s band, had died at 34, just a year after scoring one of his five Number One hits with “When You Say Nothing at All.” The writer of that song? Overstreet.

“I don’t believe that’s coincidence,” McGraw said from the podium. “I believe that’s country music.”

It was hard not to notice more than a few of those magic country moments during the 31st annual Medallion Ceremony, which welcomed McGraw as the Modern Era Artist, Overstreet in the Songwriter category, and the late sibling duo Ralph and Carter Stanley as Veterans Era Artists. There was Billy Strings and his arena-headlining band bringing the old-timey mountain sounds of the Stanleys into the present. There was Ricky Skaggs, another onetime member of Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys, joining Vince Gill to perform “Rank Stranger.” There was Jamey Johnson singing Overstreet’s “Forever and Ever, Amen,” while the artist who made it a country cornerstone, Randy Travis, looked on. And there were the frequent tributes to 2000 inductee Dolly Parton, who died in August, from Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young, from Molly Tuttle and a band of female bluegrass aces, and from Patty Loveless, who closed the evening with the traditional singing of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” ad-libbing lines about our “sister Dolly.”

This being a pinnacle, if invitation-only, event of the country music calendar, star power was ever present. Blake Shelton was in the house, singing the cheeky Overstreet composition “Some Beach.” The 2023 inductee Tanya Tucker, who claimed she had recently fallen down a flight of stairs, dropped one-liners about muscle relaxants during her speech inducting Overstreet. And Parker McCollum and Lainey Wilson both sang for McGraw, with Alabama’s Randy Owen hanging the ceremonial medallion around McGraw’s neck.

Even Faith Hill made a rare public appearance to literally cheer on her husband’s induction: Throughout the evening, Hill pumped her fists, shouted praise, and led standing ovations for the performers. The only thing that would have made the evening better is if Hill took the stage to sing, something country fans have been hoping for in general since 2020. (In his frequently tearful speech, McGraw looked ahead to a day when he’s in the audience, watching his wife being inducted.)

Still, there was one moment that stood above all the rest for the way it conveyed emotion, courage, and the power of a song. As Young finished his remarks about McGraw’s 2004 carpe-diem hit “Live Like You Were Dying,” written by Craig Wiseman and Tim Nichols, the Hall’s CEO introduced the artist who would be interpreting it onstage — country vocal group Lady A. Last month, the trio’s singer Charles Kelley revealed he was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and that he’d be starting treatment, making his appearance on the Hall of Fame’s stage to sing a ballad about fleeting time immensely powerful.

Kelley, in perhaps the most emotional performance of his own career, nailed the song.

It wasn’t coincidence, as the man he was honoring might say. It was country music.
